There are a lot of things that happen from the time that a merchant charges a customer’s credit card to when it’s authorized. The process requires multiple financial institutions and electronic transfer systems to deliver the final product.

While this process is interesting, it’s not necessary to know most of the information in order to acquire and maintain the best merchant account for your business. Instead, we have described the basics flow of an electronic bank card transaction process below. When a merchant runs a customer’s credit card the following process takes place:

  • The terminal, software, or gateway contacts the credit card processor (referred to as a third-party processor), or the acquiring bank, with the customer’s credit card and billing information along with the transaction information such as the amount of the sale.
  • The processor or bank then relays the information to the issuing bank or card-issuing organization. This is the place where the customer’s credit card comes from. MBNA, Citi Bank, and Bank of America are large credit card issuers.
  • The issuing bank then sends an approval or decline back to the third-party processor based on a number of different criteria such as available balance, validity of the information supplied, etc.
  • Once the approval (or decline) is confirmed by the issuing bank, an authorization is issued against the customer’s credit balance. This means that the funds in question have been reserved for the sale.
  • The transaction is then assigned an authorization number which is a code that identifies the individual transaction.
  • This information is relayed back to the merchant’s processing equipment and is displayed for their records so that they know the credit card has been approved (or declined).
  • All authorizations are stored by the credit card equipment in something called a batch. Batches are very important.  Batching out is the act of sending the stored authorizations to the bank for funding.  Batches can be done manually at the end of each business day or most processors have the ability to program terminals for automatic batch at a time the customer prefers.

Merchant Accounts & Risk

Merchant processing, like any other financial service, is based almost totally on the assessment of risk. When a merchant charges a customer’s credit card the acquiring bank is going to deposit funds into that merchant’s bank account assuming that the merchant has delivered the product or service that they’ve said they would.

The processing or acquiring bank gives the merchant money based almost entirely on the assumption that the merchant has delivered the products or services that they’ve promised. Credit card processors have to be very careful about who they issue merchant accounts to and how the accounts are being used. The following is a hypothetical scenario of a credit card processor’s worst nightmare:

Let’s say that processor “A” issues a merchant account to John Doe for his new online business and gives John Doe a $20,000 processing limit. In his first month of business John Doe has a phenomenal month of sales totaling $15,000 but he never ships a single product. At the end of the month all of his customers are demanding their money back but John Doe has already closed his bank account and skipped town. In a case like this, the processing or acquiring would be stuck refunding $15,000 back to John Doe’s customers.

Most well-intentioned business people do not think like this but it’s the basic reason why merchant accounts are so scrutinized. Personal credit status of the business owner, the business type, processing volume, and other variables are all considered by the processor or acquirer when a business or individual applies for a merchant account.

How Do I Select A Processing Company?

With the mammoth competition and saturation in the credit card processing industry, finding the right company to work with can be somewhat tricky.

For lack of a better explanation, credit card processors are very much like anything else that simply takes you from point A to point B.  They are the entity which transfers money from your cardholders credit card to your bank.  Rates can always be negotiated.  And all processors will magically reduce 50% of their overall expenses just as you are threatening to leave, and you become the recipient of lower fees in exchange for several more months with the same processor.

What Is Underwriting?

The underwriting of credit card processing accounts is done by merchant banks that are members of the Credit Card Associations of Visa and MasterCard. The underwriting process consists of evaluating the risks, associated with allowing a merchant to accept credit card payments through a detailed analysis of the applicant business’ credit history and the business’ prior processing history (if applicable). Just as with a personal or a business loan, banks want to make certain that applicant businesses are responsible entities, because, in effect, a credit card processing service is a form of credit. When a merchant receives a card payment, it is authorized, cleared and settled by the merchant processing bank. At the end of the business day the processing bank receives the transaction information and funds the amount, after subtracting its own processing costs, into the merchant’s bank account. Then it waits for the card issuing bank to remit the payment amount. At this time, if the card issuer or their cardholder disputes the transaction, initiating a chargeback, or if it turns out that the transaction was fraudulent, the processing bank may never receive its money. In addition, if a merchant generates a consistently high level of chargebacks (over 1%), the Credit Card Association will assess fines on the credit card processing company that has underwritten the account.

Merchants typically receive their credit card processing service from Independent Sales Organizations (ISO). These are licensed by the Credit Card Associations and have relationships with merchant processing banks. Once a processing agreement is signed, the processing bank, also known as a merchant bank or acquiring bank, commits to acquiring the merchant’s card transactions and funding the transaction amount minus the processing costs. Processing banks are usually card issuers as well.

Factors in Underwriting:

It is decided as part of the underwriting process if the account is acceptable to board. Factors that are considered as part of this process are:

Merchant type - One type of merchant poses a greater risk than another. For example, a grocery store poses a lower less risk than an auto repair shop. The chances of a cardholder having a dispute about vegetables they bought at the grocery store are less likely than a cardholder having a dispute with an auto repair shop about how his car was fixed or the cost. Also the average transaction size for groceries is much lower than an auto repair shop.

Card acceptance method - Card-present (face-to-face) transactions pose a much lower risk that card-not-present transactions. When a card is swiped, it is safe to assume that the cardholder has seen the merchandise and has voluntarily handed over the card to the merchant to pay for it. In card-not-present transactions the cardholder likely has not seen the merchandise and does not take delivery on the spot. Any mail order, telephone order (MOTO) or Internet merchant accounts fall into the card-not-present category. More information is usually collected in the form of a MOTO Sheet, which explains more about the business model of the merchant. There is also a much higher merchant and cardholder fraud rate associated with card-not-present transactions.

Delivery method – In the event of a grocery store, items are purchased and received by the cardholder right on the spot – there is no delay in delivery. An Internet clothing store accepts cards online, and then ships the goods after the transaction is processed. This is called future delivery. There is a larger chance that the cardholder may not receive the goods.

Another subject under future delivery are membership merchants. A gym that sells annual memberships is riskier than a gym that sells monthly memberships. The reason is if a gym sells 1000 annual memberships for $300 in January and goes out of business in November, then all cardholders have chargeback rights, as the gym is incapable of honoring the contract term that the cardholder paid for. In this case the potential chargeback exposure is $300,000, and that is only from January’s sales. Adding the additional months up to November could total as much as $3,000,000 in losses.

Borrowing capacity – What is the merchant’s borrowing history and track record of repayment? How much debt can the merchant handle without adversely affecting its financial performance and cash flow? Will the merchant be able to honor its obligations to the bank processor including the reimbursement of chargebacks and credit losses? This becomes more critical in underwriting for businesses that have a greater predisposition to chargebacks.

Capital – How well capitalized is the merchant? How much money have the owners invested in the business? If the merchant is operating with a negative net worth, for example, do the owners have the financial strength to add more of their own money?

Collateral – Collateral represents assets that the merchant pledges as an alternate repayment source for any obligations owed to the processor under the Merchant Processing Agreement. Examples include cash reserves, personal guarantees, certificates of deposit, letters of credit and cross-corporate guarantees, when appropriate.

The greater the predisposition to chargebacks, the more important it is to have credit worthy merchants with proper collateral and capital.

Approval Parameters:

When the merchant is approved, certain parameters are set that help Money Talkz LLC monitor and control continued risk exposure. Examples are:

Approved monthly processing volume – Underwriting will evaluate the requested amount on applications and determine if this amount is acceptable, or may opt to lower or raise this dollar figure based on risk.

Approved average ticket amount – As above with the monthly processing volume, the same counts for the average ticket amount (the amount of each sale).

Reserve Account – If Money Talkz LLC or bank processor feels it requires additional protection from potential losses; we are authorized to fund some of the merchant’s deposits into a reserve account. The funds belong to the merchant and are held as collateral in the event of rejects and charge backs. When Money Talkz feels the risk no longer warrants the reserve, the funds are returned to the merchant.

Deposit Delay – Typical deposit times occur within 12 to 24 hours. For accounts with a greater perceived risk, Money Talkz may elect to delay these deposits by one to three additional days. Most MOTO merchants are set to 1-day delay (48-hour funding).

Underwriting Guidelines:

Money Talkz LLC and/or bank processor underwriting guidelines are structured to require increasing levels of due diligence as the perceived risk of processing increases. The process looks at the type of business, monthly volumes and average ticket size.

  1. In order to obtain an underwriting credit decision quickly, ensure that the credit card processing application is complete, and that all the required support documentation is included with your account.
  2. Should you require real-time updates as to the status of your account, contact your account representative.
  3. For faxed applications it is important to consider the quality of the information being sent. The application must be legible and photo identification must be clear and readable.
  4. It is a requirement in Section 326 of the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 that Money Talkz LLC and/or bank processor verifies the identities of all merchant account applicants. Hence, a government-issued ID must be included with the application package.
  5. Credit reports will be obtained for all necessary merchant applications and are reviewed for verification of identity as well as credit criteria. Credit scoring plays a supporting role in the application process; however, there are many other additional factors included in the decision process such as type of business, processing volume and previous processing history. Poor credit history alone does not necessarily result in a decline.
  6. Documentation verifying the merchant’s business address as well as goods/services being sold may be required on all applicants. You can obtain a list of several types of documents that we can accept with new merchant applications to satisfy those needs.
  7. Certain accounts require financial statements, such as:
    1. Three consecutive months of business checking account bank statements
    2. Company income statements and balance sheet.
    3. Last two year-end company federal tax returns, all schedules.
    4. Any previous bankcard processor statements.

What Are Merchant Industry Types?

In the payment processing industry, every merchant is classified into a specific “merchant account type” category, based on how they collect card information and conduct transactions. To learn which category your business is classified under, we have defined the characteristics of each merchant account type in this article.

There are two main merchant account type categories, “Swiped” and “Keyed,” which reflect the basic methods used to capture card information. Within these main categories are sub-categories, broken down according to the business environment and processing technique.

“Swiped” or, “Card Present” merchants directly interact with their customers face-to-face and capture card information by physically swiping cards through a terminal or point-of-sale system. The sub-categories within this group include:

  • Retail Merchants“Retail” merchants typically conduct business in a storefront or office where they interact with their customers face-to-face and physically swipe cards through a terminal or Point-of-Sale system.
  • Restaurant Merchants: “Restaurant” merchants require the ability to add tips to their charges (Note: Restaurants that do not process tips are still considered “Retail” merchants in this industry). Using a special tip function, they authorize a customer’s card for a certain sale amount and then settle that authorization with an adjusted price to include the tip amount.
  • Wireless/Mobile Merchants: “Wireless” or “Mobile” merchants need to accept and authorize cards wherever they are located, which is usually on the road. Using a portable wireless terminal, these merchants process on-site, real-time transactions at their customers’ locations.
  • Lodging Merchants“Lodging” merchants (e.g. Hotels, Motels, and Bed & Breakfasts) authorize a customer’s card for a specific sale amount and, depending on the customer’s length of stay, will adjust and settle out that authorization a day or more later to include additional fees such as taxes, etc.

“Keyed or, “Card-Not-Present” merchants indirectly collect their customers’ card information, and, depending on the business environment and technology used, can process transactions in various ways. The sub-categories within this group include:

  • Keyed Face-to-Face Merchants: “Keyed Face-to-Face” merchants eventually meet their customers in person to deliver the product or provide the service, but they don’t actually collect card information with the customer or card present. Generally, they take orders over the telephone, via fax, mail, email, or the Internet, and then manually key-enter card information into a terminal, software, payment gateway, or other point-of-sale system.
  • Mail Order/Telephone Order (“M.O.T.O.”) Merchants“M.O.T.O.” merchants rarely, if ever, meet their customers face-to-face. Instead, these merchants collect orders and card information over the telephone, by mail, fax, or via the Internet, and manually key-enter transactions through a terminal, software, payment gateway, or point-of-sale system. Then, once payment for an order is confirmed, the product is shipped for future delivery.
  • Internet or E-Commerce Merchants“Internet” or, “E-Commerce” merchants conduct all business through a website, so all card information is collected and transactions are processed online, in real-time, using a payment gateway that’s built into their website’s shopping cart. So, once the order/sale is confirmed, the card is charged instantly and the product is shipped for future delivery. (Note: This merchant type does not apply to businesses that only market on the Internet, but do not immediately process payments via their website, upon order confirmation.)

Before you read about the different merchant account pricing models, it’s important to understand what interchange is and how it is directly responsible for the underlying cost of processing credit cards. If you haven’t already done so, read through the interchange fees section of this guide.

Interchange Plus or Pass-Through Pricing

Interchange plus pricing functions just as the name implies. On this model the merchant service provider passes the actual interchange charges to the merchant along with a standard mark up in the form of a percentage referred to as basis points. Interchange plus pricing is transparent because the charge to the merchant is the actual interchange charge plus a fixed mark-up.


Flat Rate Merchant Account Pricing

The flat rate credit card processing model is the latest and greatest form of merchant account pricing. The biggest distinction and advantage of flat rate pricing is that it’s the only pricing model where processing charges from the merchant service provider do not increase along with sales volume.

On a flat rate model the merchant service provider passes actual interchange costs directly to the merchant for every transaction. Unlike all other pricing models, there are no mark-ups of any kind over interchange.

On this model, a merchant service provider makes their money by charging a flat monthly fee. This fee is often referred to as an account maintenance fee or monthly service charge.

When considering flat rate merchant account pricing it’s important to make the distinction between actual processing charges that are a result of interchange, and the merchant service provider’s charges. It’s not possible for interchange to ever be flat because of the different categories and qualifications. The term “flat” only applies to the provider’s charges.

Flat rate pricing is very transparent and often the least expensive way to process credit cards.


Enhanced Recover Reduced (ERR)

Enhanced Recover Reduced or ERR is a pricing model that’s been around for a while but has been gaining in popularity lately as merchant service providers look for more profitable options to the less expensive flat rate or interchange plus pricing models.

ERR is often referred to as a mixed or blended rate because it’s a combination of tiered and interchange plus pricing – with a twist. ERR is a non-transparent form of pricing because it uses a base qualified rate and also a truly hidden charge in the form of the difference between actual interchange and the qualified rate. This hidden charge is the “enhanced” part of the pricing.

With ERR pricing, a merchant service provider will quote three different rates – a qualified debit rate, a qualified credit rate and a non-qualified surcharge. When a merchant processes a qualified transaction they will be charged the qualified rate quote by the provider. Things get a little fuzzier when they process a transaction that doesn’t qualify.

In this case, the merchant will be charged the true interchange rate, plus the non-qualified surcharge and the difference between target interchange for the transaction and the qualified rate. That’s the “enhanced” part of ERR pricing that makes it look a lot better than it really is.


Tiered Merchant Account Pricing

Tiered merchant account pricing is currently the most popular pricing model. It’s been around since the dawn of credit card processing, and it was a lot more cost effective back when the card brands only a few interchange fee categories.

Now that interchange has grown to over five hundred categories between Visa, MasterCard and Discover – the days of a tiered account being cost effective are long gone. The major problem with tiered pricing isn’t that it’s often more expensive than other pricing models, it’s that tiered pricing makes it very difficult to tell what you’re truly being charged. Tiered pricing allows merchant service providers to disguise actual processing costs by quoting low qualified rates that make an account appear less expensive than it actually is.

The tiered pricing model functions by reducing interchange down to as few as two or as many as six or more pricing tiers. The first tier of this model is called the qualified rate. The qualified rate is the base rate to which all subsequent tiers are added. The qualified rate is often referred to as a loss leader.

“Loss leader” is the term used in the sales industry to refer to something that lures customers by looking better than it actually is. It looks like a great benefit, but it never really delivers. The qualified rate is a perfect example of a loss leader because it’s the rate that merchants focus on, but it’s only responsible for a small portion of their actual processing costs.

Tiered pricing is a non-transparent pricing model because the actual interchange charge is disguised by generalized pricing tiers.

Most merchant accounts function on a tiered system where interchange categories rates are divided into three tiers called qualified, mid-qualified, and non-qualified. The qualified discount rate is the lowest obtainable rate, followed by the mid-qualified rate, and then by the non-qualified rate. Merchant service providers advertise their accounts using the qualified discount rate because it’s the lowest and most appealing rate. For example, a retail merchant account may have a discount schedule that looks like this:

  • Qualified Discount Rate: 1.XX%
  • Mid-Qualified Discount Rate: 2.XX%
  • Non-Qualified Discount Rate: 3.XX%

When a credit card transaction is raised to the higher mid or non-qualified rate it’s said to have “downgraded”. There are two very basic reasons why a credit card transaction will be downgraded to a higher qualification rate. The first reason has to do with the type of credit card that is being charged and the second is the method that the merchant uses to charge the card.

The first reason why credit card transactions will downgrade to a higher discount rate has to do directly with the type of credit card that is being charged. The card associations (VISA & MasterCard) have over 100 different qualification rates, called interchange qualifications, for different types of credit cards and each type of card is assigned a different qualification rate. Of course, having merchant accounts with hundreds of different rates would be very confusing so most merchant accounts are setup with three general rates.

When a transaction is processed the true qualification rate of the card being charged is rounded up to the next closest category which either mid or non-qualified depending on how the merchant account is setup by the service provider. Exactly how a credit card will qualify and into which rate category it will fall has a lot to do with the merchant service provider that governs the account. For instance, a corporate credit card may fall into the mid-qualified category when run through a merchant account that is provided by company “A”, while the same exact credit card will fall into the non-qualified category when run through a merchant account that is provided by company “B”.

Depending on the size of the provider and/or the agreement they have with their acquiring bank, merchant service providers have a certain degree of control over how different types of credit cards qualify under the merchant accounts that they issue and govern. If you will be accepting a lot of corporate credit cards, small business credit cards, or other types of non-personal cards, you should work with your provider to have these types of cards qualified into the best possible category.

The type of credit card that will run through at a qualified rate on almost all merchant accounts is a personal non-reward credit card that is issued by a United States bank. The following is a list of credit cards that are commonly charged at a mid or non-qualified rate.

  • Small Business Credit Cards
  • Corporate Credit Cards
  • Government Credit Cards
  • International Credit Cards
  • Rewards Credit Cards
  • Cash Back Credit Cards

The second reason why a credit card transaction will downgrade to a mid or non-qualified rate has to do with how the credit card is transacted by the merchant. Keying-In – Card-present merchant accounts are setup under the assumption that the merchant will process transactions by physically swiping credit cards through a terminal. This process is called electronic data capture. If a retail merchant keys-in a credit card transaction by entering the credit card number on the keypad of their terminal, the transaction will almost always downgrade to the non-qualified rate. It’s very common for a retail business to also have an e-commerce website. Many retail businesses use their card present merchant account to process their online sales as well and they are unaware of the fact that they are paying higher fees for these transactions. In this scenario it often saves money to open a second card-not-present account for the online transactions.

Address Verification Service (AVS) – VISA requires all card-not-present transactions to be processed using AVS. VISA also requires the AVS information to match and be correct in order for transactions to run at the lowest possible rate (qualified). Any merchant that processes credit card transactions when the customer and/or the card is not present (such as an online or mail order business) must use AVS when charging VISA cards to avoiding having all VISA transactions automatically downgrade to the non-qualified rate. In order to use AVS properly the billing address of the credit card being charged must match the billing address on file for that card at the issuing bank.

When taking a credit card order collect the customer’s correct billing address and zip code. Once you have this information you must enter it into your terminal, gateway, or processing software, when charging the customer’s card. If the AVS information does not match, the terminal or processing equipment will let you know by displaying an “N”. Please note that all processing equipment is different and you should verify processing symbols with your merchant service provider. It is recommended that you void transactions that don’t show an AVS match and that you contact the customer to obtain the correct billing address. Once you have the correct billing address you may recharge the card and the transaction will fall into the qualified category.

It’s not possible to know which qualification rate a credit card transaction will fall under before charging the card.

  • Qualified Discount Rate – The qualified discount rate is the lowest possible percentage rate that can be charged for a credit card transaction. To maximize the number of qualified transactions be sure that you are properly charging cards per the guidelines set forth for your specific type of merchant account. These guidelines can be obtained from your merchant service provider.
  • Mid-Qualified Discount Rate – The mid-qualified discount rate is the second highest discount rate.
  • Non-Qualified Discount Rate – The non-qualified discount rate is the highest possible rate that can be charged for a transaction.

It’s very important to keep an eye on exactly how much you are paying in mid and non-qualified fees by reading your merchant account statements every month.

When Fees Are Charged

Merchant service providers typically utilize two different methods for charging processing fees. After you familiarize yourself with the different ways you can contact you merchant provider and request that your fees be charged using the method that you prefer. Some providers have control over when fees are charged and others may not.

Throughout The Month (Real-Time)
The most common way that a merchant service provider charges for processing fees is to deduct the qualified discount rate from a transaction prior to depositing it in to your bank account. At the end of the month the processor will make an additional charge for all mid and non-qualified surcharge fees, as well as any flat dollar amount fees such as transaction fees, batch fees, and statement fees. Many merchants do not like this method because it makes it difficult to keep account balances and books in order.

The second method that a merchant service provider will use to charge for processing fees is to wait until the end of each month and then deduct fees in one lump-sum charge. This method carries more risk to the acquiring bank and some providers are not able to offer this option to their merchants. Third-party processors and larger independent sales offices (ISO) that assume risk for their own merchant accounts are usually able to provide this method of charging fees at their own discretion.

Aside from being a source of headaches and confusion for many business people, interchange fees are the basis for credit card processing expenses. Think of them as the wholesale prices charged to process various types of credit card transactions.

Before I get into the specifics of interchange, it’s important to understand what issuing and acquiring banks are and how they’re crucial players in the credit card processing scenario.

First up is the issuing bank. As the name implies an issuing bank issues credit cards to consumers. If you have a credit card, like most people, you send your payment each month to your issuing bank. Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase are examples of large issuing banks.

Acquiring banks are on the side of the credit card transaction. Businesses open merchant accounts through acquiring banks, or companies backed by acquiring banks. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll leave them out of the mix for now. Because acquiring banks are where businesses go to open a merchant account, they’re often referred to as merchant banks. Merchant banks are also the institution that deposits funds from credit card sales into a merchant’s business bank account.

When a customer (cardholder) uses their credit card to pay for products or services, the business’s acquiring bank (where they have their merchant account) pays the customer’s issuing bank a percentage of the gross sale amount. Depending on the brand of card being used, the percentage that they pay is dictated by either Visa or MasterCard’s interchange reimbursement fee schedule (we’ll leave other card brands such as American Express out of the mix for now).

So, in a single sentence; an interchange fee is the amount of a credit card transaction that an acquiring bank pays (or reimburses) and issuing bank.

How Does The Credit Card Transaction Process Work?

 

Authorization of Card

1.            The credit card user presents their credit card to make payment in person, or enters their details into a form or to a customer service representative by phone.

2.            The merchant swipes the card or the account details are digitally entered into the system for submission to the merchant account for processing.

3.            The merchant bank electronically requests card authorization from the card issuer (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express).

4.            The card issuer approves or declines the transaction, and sends the response back to the merchant bank.

5.            The merchant bank sends response back to the merchant, and the merchant processes the transaction based on whether the card is approved or declined.

Clearing and Settlement of Payment

1.            The funds from the credit card payment are deposited into the merchant’s bank, the merchant’s account is credited and an electronic submission of the transaction is sent to the credit card processor.

2.            The credit card processing system, facilitates payment, pays the merchant bank, debits the cardholders account, and sends the transaction on to the card issuer.

3.            The card issuer posts the transaction to the cardholders account and sends the monthly statement to the cardholder for payment.

4.           Cardholder receives their credit card statement and sends payment.

What is the difference between Pay-As-You-Go plans and a monthly rate prepaid plan?

Pay-As-You-Go is the most widely used prepaid wireless plan. This plan typically provides a bucket of anytime minutes that typically range in pricing from $.04 – $.50 per minute depending on the service provider and amount of prepaid airtime purchased. Expiration periods also vary from 30-365 days depending on the denomination and some service providers offer roll over minutes, if the subscriber purchases additional airtime minutes before the expiration date of previously purchased minutes. Airtime denominations that are available at WebPayMobile range from $10 – $100 depending on the service provider. There is no monthly commitment or minimum purchase required.

Monthly Rate Plans are similar to a traditional post paid (contract) wireless plan that usually now provides a unlimited talk, unlimited talk and text, or unlimited talk, text, and data. Jailbreaking vs Unlocking vs Flashing

Cell phone unlocking and jailbreaking is not only 100% legal, it also offers consumers the right they legally have to free trade and choices. On November 22, 2006, the Copyright Office issued new rules allowing people to circumvent technological protection measures on their cellphones in order to be able to switch carriers and use the phone on a different network.

Jailbreaking means removing restrictions in your device’s default software so that it can run third-party apps and extensions (themes and tweaks) not approved by Apple. Rooting and jailbreaking are essentially the same thing. The only difference is what device you are referring to and which term is generally associated with that device. Jailbreaking is generally used to describe Apple products like the iPhone, while rooting is used to describe most other Linux based devices like Android.

Besides just having those terms coined with their respective operating systems, the general acceptance is that rooting/jailbreaking an Apple product is a much harder process. Only reason really is that Apple is the only phone manufacturer so opposed to jailbreaking that they have devoted resources to resolve jailbreaking exploits whenever they arise. Because of this it might seem more “liberating” when rooting an iPhone and as such deserve a more suitable name perhaps.

Unlike GSM cell phones, unlocking the phone is not enough to make a CDMA cell phone work because instead of using a sim card, the data used to connect to a network is stored internally. Some CDMA cell phone providers put a lock on their phone to block it from being programmed. This is referred to as a SPC. (Service Provider Code) The first step to reprogramming a phone is determining if it has a 6 digit SPC lock code set on it or not. What do I need to set up service? Can I keep my number?

Yes! Almost any wireless carrier allows you to port over your existing number as long as you can provide basic information to your existing account that is necessary for a carrier to be allowed to take your number from the active network it is on. Generally you need to know your account information (name, address, etc on file), the account number, and the account passcode (if one exists, as with Metro PCS).

If you want your phone to support high speed data, make sure that it supports the 850/1900 Mhz HSDPA band if you are going to use an AT&T-based MVNO or that it support 1700 Mhz HDSDPA if you are going to use a T-Mobile based MVNO.

A phone can be unlocked for voice and text service, but if it only supports 850 Mhz and 2100 Mhz for high speed data,  it can only get 3G data on AT&T towers in parts of the country that have high speed data on 850 Mhz (which is probably almost everywhere).  It will not provide high speed data on T-Mobile’s towers at all (Example: A locked AT&T phone or an iPhone that is unlocked to work on T-Mobile).  To ensure that you have high speed data everywhere AT&T operates, you’d want a phone that provides high speed data on both 850 Mhz *and* 1900 Mhz. If you wanted a phone that would work on T-mobile’s towers with high speed data, you could buy a U.S. specification device, which would provide 3G data on 850, 1700, and 2100 Mhz, but which would likely be locked to T-Mobile (or cost an additional fee to be unlocked).

What is the difference between CDMA and GSM?

GSM and CDMA are different technologies for carrying digital mobile phone calls. In the United States, Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM. The next generation version of GSM is called UMTS, and AT&T used that technology in certain markets. AT&T refers to these areas as requiring a “3G phone.”

We have now entered the error of LTE service. LTE is the natural upgrade path for carriers with GSM/UMTS networks, but even CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless have upgraded their networks to the utilize the technology. LTE is a standard for wireless data communications technology and an evolution of the GSM/UMTS standards. Much of the LTE standard addresses the upgrading of 3G UMTS to what will eventually be 4G mobile communications technology.

Generally speaking, CDMA networks can use higher power levels and thus reach larger areas and penetrate buildings better than GSM. As a result, CDMA handsets have significantly shorter battery life than GSM handsets. GSM handsets tend to have better call quality than CDMA handsets. On CDMA handsets, female adults and children tend to sound muffled, especially if they are talking on a Bluetooth headset. In addition, it is easier to bring your own device to a GSM Network. GSM phones have better call management options, including the ability to add a call that you receive to a conference call, and the ability to have up to five callers conferenced together. CDMA phones generally only support 3-way calling, and only with calls placed from the handset to other users.

Advantages of CDMA include:

  • Increased cellular communications security.
  • Simultaneous conversations.
  • Increased efficiency, meaning that the carrier can serve more subscribers.
  • Smaller phones.
  • Low power requirements and little cell-to-cell coordination needed by operators.
  • Extended reach – beneficial to rural users situated far from cells.

Disadvantages of CDMA include:

  • Due to its proprietary nature, all of CDMA’s flaws are not known to the engineering community.
  • CDMA is relatively new, and the network is not as mature as GSM.
  • CDMA cannot offer international roaming, a large GSM advantage.

The “best price” depends upon who you are, where you want to use the phone, what phone you want to use, and how many minutes you’ll use the phone for voice calls, how many text messages you intend to send, how many picture messages you intend to send, how many megabytes of data you intend to use, and the data speed you want.

Given so many variables, and now so many carriers to choose from for wireless service, the truth is more then one company would probably be satisfactory for you. The other thought to consider (with prepaid carriers) is that plans are pretty fluid, meaning they change a lot. With the competition continuing to grow, plans and prices continue to become more competitive.

With the 4 main postpaid contract carriers the general idea is as follows:

What Is An MVNO?

A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (“MVNO”) is a company that offers mobile telephone services by reselling the mobile services of another carrier, usually with certain limitations, but at a lower cost. In the U.S., there are MVNOs that resell AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon services at a lower cost than you can obtain service directly from any of them. Although the MVNO’s often offer services at a lower price, there are usually some differences between the services provided by an MVNO and the services provided by the major carriers.

AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon each have roaming agreements that allow you to use someone else’s network in areas that they don’t service. For example, if you sign up with Sprint and you roam outside of Sprint’s relatively small nationwide CDMA network, you can make calls using Verizon’s CDMA network at no extra charge. AT&T and T-Mobile have similar agreements with smaller regional GSM carriers, and with each other. Even Verizon has roaming agreements with certain rural CDMA carriers where it has no coverage itself. In addition, Verizon operates some GSM towers in certain rural areas (like Southeastern Oregon) that its CDMA customers cannot use, but which it allows AT&T and T-Mobile customers to use under a roaming agreement.

Many of the MVNO’s do not have these same roaming agreements. Some of the MVNOs limit their customers to their underlying carrier’s towers only. Others allow roaming for voice calls, but not data.

Even worse, some MVNO’s have questionable advertising practices, including advertising “unlimited” plans when there are undisclosed limits which will result in the cancellation of some, or all, of your service if you exceed them. Other MVNOs include questionable claims about data speed. For example, one MVNO advertises unlimited “up to 3G data,” but limits the data speed to 119 kbs, which is actually slower than 2G speeds.

However, if you live in an urban area where the MVNO’s underlying carrier has good coverage, and you don’t mind the possibility of slower data, an MVNO might be a good idea, and might save you a lot of money.

Step 3: Trouble Shooting

If your handset freezes for whatever reason and displays the ‘Phone Freeze’ or ‘Return for Service’ message then you will need to use the unfreeze code that was issued with your unlock codes.

Below you will see a list of instructions for entering the unfreeze code into different models of Samsung handsets.

Choose the handset instructions closest to your own model if it is not directly available. (i.e. if you have a Samsung i900, consider using the Samsung F480 unfreeze instructions).

NB: Unfreeze instructions are given as an added bonus to your unlock service. This is not the service you purchased and therefore it is provided free of charge.

Reasons for “Phone Freeze”

1. Inputting the unfreeze code rather than the unlock code into your handset.
2. Following the incorrect input procedure for your handset (these must be followed 100% correctly).
3. Handset automatically displaying “Phone Freeze” when an unaccepted SIM card is inserted into the handset, however when the accepted SIM card is inserted, the handset works fine.

Unlocking the phone when in “Phone Freeze”

In order to unlock your handset when the phone is frozen, you need to have access to the handset keypad.

  • Click Yes
  • Enter the unlock code and press enter
  • Phone is now UNLOCKED!
  • Reboot device by pulling battery out
  • Go to “Manage Connections” and turn Mobile network on

Method 2 on How to Unlock BlackBerry Torch 9800, 9810, 9850, 9860

  • Ensure a SIM Card is inserted
  • Go to ‘Manage Connections’
  • Click on ‘Turn All Connections Off’
  • Go to ‘Options’
  • Click on ‘Device’
  • Click on ‘Advanced System Settings’
  • Click on ‘SIM Card’
  • Type ‘MEPD’ (NOTE: you might need to type in caps, also letters will not appear on-screen but you will be presented with personalization screen, that will display 5 locks such as network, service provider etc)
  • Type ‘MEP2? (make sure to hold ALT for 2) or hold ALT and type MEPE (NOTE: user will be prompted to enter MEP code)
  • Enter the MEP2 code numbers only (CONFIRM you get “Code Accepted” message)
    • *If you also have a MEP4 code, type ‘MEP4′ (you will be prompted to enter MEP code)
    • Enter the MEP4 code (CONFIRM you get “Code Accepted” message)
  • Reboot device by pulling battery out
  • Go to ‘Manage Connections’
  • Click on ‘Restore Connections’
  • Device is now unlocked

 

SHOW BLACKBERRY Bold 9900 / 9930

Blackberry Bold 9900 / 9930

  1. Insert not accepted SIM card in your phone and turn it on.
  2. You will be prompted to enter an unlock code (aka MEP or MEP2 or MEP4 Code) (if you don’t have an unlock code for the bold you can get one here).
  3. Click Yes
  4. Enter the unlock code and press enter
  5. Phone is now UNLOCKED!
  6. Reboot device by pulling battery out
  7. Go to “Manage Connections” and turn Mobile network on

Method 2 on How to Unlock BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930

  1. Ensure a SIM Card is inserted
  2. Go to ‘Manage Connections’
  3. Click on ‘Turn All Connections Off’

Verizon phones only:  You might need to remove  “Activation Required” on the screen or change the Phone Number to yours by following steps below:

  • Press Call (Green Button) as you would to place a call
  • Type on the screen: ##000000
  • Press the Call Button
  • You will be prompted to the screen with the phone number, change existing phone number to yours
  • Press the Menu Button to Save the options and the phone will automatically restart
  • After restarting, it will be updated
